Kansas City Fashion: Trends to Spot for Fall 2018

In a moment of fall fashion weakness, I bought the September editions of my two favorite fashion magazines Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar to scan for the big trends of fall at the same time. Friends, the Kansas City fashion trends you will see on all bloggers’ Instagram accounts, in the stores and in your closet will not disappoint. Let’s go:

Bold, Rich Reds:

I was 10 pages into the September Vogue when I realized that red is the color of the season. I know, I know: Red for fall is not ground breaking. (Especially if you’re a Nebraska fan!). But these reds were bolder and brighter than usual.

Wear What’s In Your Closet:

Time to break out those bright red teeshirts and scarfs and pair it with a cardigan and luxe accessories for an updated look.

Shop Local Kansas City Fashion:

Feeling casual Kansas City fashion? Try this bold “Made in Kansas City” tee from Wonderboy Apparel at KC Garment Collective with a midi skirt.

Under $50:

H&M Creped Skirt – $34.99. Structured enough to wear to the office, breezy enough to wear to the orchard. Admit it, you’re ready to go pick apples and it isn’t even football season.

Thrift It:

Try looking for a bold red wrap dress, maybe vintage if you hit the jackpot.

Plus Size:

I am into all of the Who, What, Wear plus size looks such as the Ruffle Mini Skirt Dress.

Animal Print:

Oh yes, everyone. Animal print is back in a big way. It won’t be Jersey Shore animal print, but a more refined look that’s ready for the office and date night.

Wear What’s In Your Closet:

Remember those animal print flats you forgot about in your closet from a few years ago? Bring ‘em out with a pair of black skinny jeans.

Shop Local Kansas City Fashion:

Alexa, How about this cropped leopard sweater from Etiquette for $74? Okay!

Under $50:

Check out the Daisy Street Cardigan for $35 or this printed cami in Bright Animal (which comes in plus and fuller bust options!) for $26. Both are from ASOS.

Thrift It:

Pick up a simple animal print tank top that someone donated after GTL and Snooki ran their pop-culture popularity course. Wear it with that suede blazer you picked up in Fall 2017.

Plus Size:

Tuck this Ava and Viv green animal print woven ¾ sleeve top into a midi skirt or french tuck into jeans. Bonus points for adding a nice hat on a Saturday afternoon!

Big, Bold Patterns:

I am here for a big, bold, high contrast, can’t-miss-it pattern. There’s almost an early 1990s vibe to all of these bold patterns. I keep seeing lots of jewel tones and gold against black backgrounds. You can do a lot with this trend that will outlast the season and be wearable into the spring:

Wear What’s In Your Closet:

Grab that striped shirt you picked up from Target over the summer and pair it with statement earrings.

Shop Local Kansas City Fashion:

Try this striped jumpsuit from Etiquette for $69. Toss a moto jacket over it for a chilly night.

Under $50:

I like this Ruffle-Trim Dress from Old Navy for $38, because you could wear it pretty much everywhere.

Thrift It:

This could be magic, if you find the right dress or jacket with the right pattern. Get in the right mindset before going to Goodwill by listening to Janet Jackson and TLC. Wear it with all black jeans or skirt + gold accessories.

Plus Size:

I’m obsessed with the Hermione Mini Dress from Fashion Nova Curve for $32, which comes in XS to 3x.

Cold Shoulder(pads):

The first time I saw this referenced in Harper’s Bazaar, I thought they had lost their minds! Shoulderpads should rightfully stay retired like bumpits and crocs. In order to not look like a secretary in Cleveland circa 1985, you don’t need to wear a shoulderpadded blazer, just look for fun sleeve details.

Wear What’s In Your Closet:

Consider breaking out a sweater with shoulder detail like a ruffle or detailing.

Shop Kansas City Fashion:

Stay bold and cold-shouldered in this yellow off-the-shoulder ruffle sweater at Addie Rose Boutique.

Under $50:

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but you can give a light shoulder pad a try with this AX Paris dress for $25 on Amazon.

Thrift It:

Make a blazer creative and yet fashion forward by getting a blazer with shoulder pads and taking out the shoulderpads, leaving the wide structure of the blazer intact. Bonus if it has big gold buttons.

Plus Size:

Try Fashion Nova’s Keep It Moving off-the-shoulder top in wine for $12. You’ll have more money for spiked cider and haunted houses at that price.
